One year ago, i said goodbyes
You settled down and closed your eyes
I miss the spaces that you took
I sometimes find that when i look
Off to the side, an empty space
Is all i see, not your bright face

Once, when i came home through the door
The clack of paws upon the floor
Would welcome me, would make me smile
With fur and tails all in a pile
Your shining eyes would say “let’s play!”
And all my cares would fade away

Out to the woods and fields we’d run
In rain and clouds and wind and sun
The weather didn’t play a part
Because i knew that in my heart
That i would give you time to play
And you would bring me joy each day

One year has passed without a friend
My saddened heart is slow to mend
But i can say, without a doubt
’Twas better with you than without
For through this life, if you must slog
It’s always better with a dog
